Rachel Loreto, LMSW
I am a licensed social worker and End of Life Doula serving clients in Vermont. I have a background working with a range of
vulnerable populations including abused and neglected children, immigrants, those with intellectual and developmental
disabilities and the unhoused.

Following a series of deaths in which I accompanied family and friends, I changed my practice focus. I spent time in contemplation of what
was important to me, personally, for a "good death"
and came up with the following, though it is always evolving:
A sense of completion,
a feeling of peace,
being cared for according to one’s preferences and wishes,
not suffering emotionally or physically
and having some choice over the end of one’s life.
These are what I consider important components of a good death. But each person is unique, with a set of values, lived experiences, perspectives and preferences. I want my clients to tell me what is important to them so that, to the extent possible, I can to help them to find their way to an empowered death - one in which they are able to exercise some choice and some control.

When I work with clients and their families, an empowered death what we work towards, together.
